Beating Work-from-Home Burnout

We didn’t know what would happen when this pandemic hit, how big it was and what would be affected. We made adjustments. Now things are kind of normal in the abnormal —  they’re still up and then they’re down, the rollercoaster is real. 

One thing that seems to be on the rise though, even if we’re used to working from home, is burnout

Different patterns of working, having the kids and partner around all day, needing to be in front of the screen more, Zooming, Skyping, boundaries broken as well as hours changed.

We’re having to find new ways of working and change can be hard.

I have had several bouts of burnout throughout both of my careers, ranging from needing to sleep more, to finally realising perhaps I needed some external help. 

The signs aren’t always obvious, life is happening at 300mph around us, but some of the signs below are things I felt, which meant I needed to step back and re-evaluate;

😴 exhaustion

🤪 difficulty shutting off from work

🌧 fluff brain (cloudy thinking)

🤤 not able to concentrate for long periods

😏 lack of any appetites 

It’s important to recognise when you’re struggling, it’s also important to ask for help if you feel like you might need it.

Recognise

Are you struggling daily? If so….

Evaluate

Work out your symptoms, can you turn it around with some easy changes? How can you reduce the amount of work you have? Delegation, some time off, a change to your regular hours, finding some time to yourself (if that’s needed) or time with other people. 

Ask for help

Asking for help can be hard, what steps could you take to get that help? Find a place or places to get help making changes. For me, I had therapy back when I was younger, now I have a life coach that I call on when I need, she helps me flush out any blockages 🧻

I’m also part of several online freelance groups that are incredible — know what I’m going through and the support is always on point. Sometimes you need another voice to help you see.

👂 Listen

🤔 Learn your boundaries

🥾 Take the steps you need to take to get your balance back.

Take care of yourself during this time, lets hope whatever the normal is after all this, we’re healthier and wiser for it.
