Beginning my graphic design journey in 2014, I remember being overwhelmed learning how to create my own design processes.
When you work for yourself you have to consider everything, from beginning to end, and every client and every project requires some form of ‘the process’, with some tweaks.
One process that I’m proud of is my logo design process, it was created to get the very best out of the creativity I use to bring together a brand. As creativity isn’t like say, accountancy, timeframes and restrictions can be a burden, but they’re necessary, so bringing together this process gives us a tangible timeline to get the job done.
So how does it go down?
💬 Deep Discussions
Once contracts and terms are agreed the discussions begin, either face to face, or phone, skype, whichever works best. This is where we gauge if we’re going to be a good fit. No one wants a designer that doesn’t understand them to create a logo for their business right?
Or if the business doesn’t resonate enough with me to be able to give it my all. Even as early as this stage I can see what colours, shapes and voice can work.
These discussions can last as long as they last, I’m learning about your company, about you, your story so far and where you see yourself heading.
The latter part is as important as the rest as we’re trying to bring together a brand that takes you where you need to be and last as long as it can.
During our discussions I’ve found out about your business and what you like, don’t like and your competitors. This all helps me formulate a direction for research. I’ll check out your competitors, see what they’re doing and how we can do it better.
I’ll look at what ideas I’ve formulated by this stage and research shapes, typography and layouts. Leaving colour until a little later in the process.

✏️ Analog Sketches
At this stage I’m with pencil and paper sketching logo ideas out, this gives me an opportunity to be as open and free as I can away from the computer.
🖥 Digital Sketches
This is where I take the best of the analog sketches over to the computer.
This can be where I realise the ones I preferred the look of on paper aren’t right for digital, or a variation of several work really well.
Focusing on typography, layout, shapes and colour – I always like to have a selection of max. 3 colours in a logo and 2-3 examples of palettes to give you an idea of what’s possible.
Bringing the list of preferred down to a maximum of 3 or 4.
🚏 Client Feedback
Now it’s time for your input, I package up the designs I’ve selected and show them to you either at an arranged meeting or via email, email usually works best so you have time to digest.
💭 Post Feedback
Once feedback is received I will act on your thoughts and discuss with you the directions we can take.
At this stage it can be as simple as we’re all happy with where we’re at or that we have further additions and alterations to make.
Once we’re done, I’ll send the logos over to you in your chosen formats and create any social media imagery we’ve agreed on.
This is pretty much the long and tall of it and a process I don’t believe in skimping on, even the smallest logo projects has this entire process included in it, but sometimes things take a little less time.
