Is it possible to market with integrity?

A question I ask myself about most things.

When I was younger, without the experience I have now I’d spend time in situations that would leave me feeling drained.

In jobs that weren’t right for me.

In relationships that were toxic.

And since becoming a freelancer I’ve had my fair share of moments deciding what I should do for the best.

What and who resonated with the ‘truth’.

The truth, I’ve learned, isn’t just telling someone honestly how you feel.

Like when you did something bad as a kid, and your parents or teacher would convince you to tell the person you did the bad thing to, and the record would be set straight.

It’s about what sits right in you.

What is your truth?

I believe this energy comes from our gut.

I understand social media marketing and the fundamentals of marketing as a whole, I also see some quite frankly shocking attempts at getting people’s attention.

Because of my absolute need to do everything from my truth, I find the idea of things like clickbait, absolutely abhorrent.

Alas, it does appear that people are drawn to loud things. The people who shout at you with loud colours, voices and promises of things they’ll probably never deliver.

Visions of travelling salesmen from the Wild West selling their wonder elixirs come to mind.

As consumers, we’re wiser, we see through old marketing tactics, we’re not taken in as much by the old stuff.

I recently posted something on Linkedin asking if it was possible to market with 100% integrity, to stick to your principles and someone scoffed at the fact that I was a marketer and was asking how to market.

I believe that to be better at what you do, you need to challenge it, ask questions, get opinions.

I don’t want to be ‘another marketer’, I want to be someone who makes a difference, does it with integrity.

I want to believe that it’s possible.

Perhaps it’ll take a bit longer.

Perhaps you’ll feel like you’re the only one.

But I bet you aren’t.
